Why you should ask for the full gallery, not the Instagram feed
Ten frames on a feed are somebody's ten best. What do the other five hundred look like? Why you should see a full gallery before you book a photographer.

When couples sit down with me for the first time, they have almost always found their photographer on Instagram. That is a perfectly logical first step and I have nothing against it. But a feed is a shop window, and you do not get the shop window. You get an album of several hundred photographs from an entire day.
The ten frames a photographer posts from one wedding are his ten best. The question you actually care about is this: what do the other five hundred look like? That is exactly what this text is about.
Instagram is the best-of, the album is the truth
Every photographer, myself included, puts the strongest work on social media. Golden hour, a tear on a father's face, the first dance under good light, the bouquet toss. That is normal, a shop window exists to catch the eye. The problem starts when a decision about an entire day rests on the window alone.
The album is a different story. In it you find the congratulations in a dim hall, lunch under the midday sun, a grandmother sitting to the side and watching, children who lost their patience for photographs long ago. The album shows how a photographer works when conditions are not perfect. And at a wedding, conditions are rarely perfect from morning until midnight.
Let us be clear, my feed is a shop window too. The difference is that behind that window stands an open shop: you can page through every album on the site down to the last photograph.
Consistency across the whole day
When you open a full gallery, do not look at individual frames first. Look at the whole. Do the photographs from the morning, from the ceremony and from the evening look like the work of the same person? Are the colours even, and does skin look natural in the twentieth photograph as much as in the two hundred and twentieth?
Consistency is the hardest part of this job, and it is impossible to judge from a feed. Ten good frames are within reach of anyone who shoots long enough. Five hundred even frames from a single day are a craft.
Notice also how many photographs come from each part of the day. If the preparations are covered with five frames and the party with fifty, that tells you where the photographer finds himself. There is no wrong answer here, but there is an answer that matches what the two of you want from your album.
The finest compliment I ever received was not for a single photograph. It came when a couple told me their album felt like a film running from morning until midnight.
A dim hall, the midday sun, rain
Every wedding has at least one difficult condition. In one place it is a hall with mixed light, in another a ceremony scheduled at noon, in a third rain that turns the timeline upside down. In a full gallery, look for exactly those stretches: how the photographs from the darkest part of the evening look, and how the portraits look while the sun is still high.
That part of the craft is especially dear to me. Difficult conditions are where you see the difference between a photographer who knows his tools and a photographer who only knows golden hour. That is why I am not ashamed of a single photograph from a dim hall in my albums.
That is also why I keep full albums on the site, from the morning preparations to the last dance. I keep them public so you can see the average, because the average is what you get. The best frames arrive as a gift on top of it.
What to look for in a full album
When an album of several hundred photographs is in front of you, here is what is worth checking.
- Even colours and a natural skin tone from the first photograph to the last
- How the frames from a dim hall and from harsh midday sun look
- The emotions of the guests, because the day is carried by the people around you as well
- The moments between poses: someone straightening a tie, someone quietly wiping a tear
