How to choose a wedding photographer: a guide without the rush

Highlights are advertising, the whole album is the truth. How to recognize a photographer whose style is genuinely yours, and what actually books the date.

Senada and Harun at their wedding, a relaxed moment together

The venue is cleared within an afternoon and the flowers wilt in a few days. What stays from a wedding forever are the photographs. That is why choosing a photographer is not something you settle in passing, somewhere between the invitations and the cake tasting.

I photograph weddings across Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region, and I watch up close how couples decide. Some book in a single evening on a recommendation, others compare portfolios for months and cannot move an inch. This guide is what I would tell a friend over coffee: what really matters and how to recognize your person behind the lens.

Look at whole albums, not the best shots

The home page and the social media of every photographer show his twenty best photographs. That is normal, but it tells you very little about actual quality. A wedding lasts twelve hours and more and passes through every condition photography knows, from a dark hall to midday sun and the stage lights. You need someone who is reliable in all of them.

So ask every candidate for two or three complete albums, from the morning preparations to the last dance. That is exactly why I have put whole albums publicly on the site. Once you have gone through a few hundred photographs from one and the same wedding, you know exactly what you will get. The average of an album is the truth, highlights are advertising.

The style has to suit you, not the trend

Editing that is everywhere on social media this season can look like a passing fashion in ten years. So next to the question of whether a photographer is good there is a more important one: is his way of seeing also yours. Some people find themselves in warm tones and a filmic look, others in natural colors and a timeless feel, and others again in an editorial approach with strong contrast and attitude.

With me that choice is even formalized: I edit every album in one of three visual brands, so a couple knows in advance how the album will look. Whoever you end up booking, check whether you like the way that photographer sees the whole day. One good photograph happens to everyone, a consistent eye does not.

Ask what a whole day with him looks like

The photographer is the only vendor who is with you from the morning coffee to the last song. How he behaves with the guests, with the grandmother who runs from the camera and the best man who runs after her, all of that shows directly in the album. Ask how he works during the ceremony, whether he directs or lets things happen, and what his evening in the hall looks like.

At the weddings I photograph I try to be present and invisible at the same time. The most honest frames happen when people forget there is a camera in the room.

The meeting: trust shows within ten minutes

A portfolio gets you to a shortlist, but the decision is made in conversation. Meet in person or over a video call and pay attention to how you feel. Is someone listening to you or delivering a monologue? Does he ask questions about the two of you or only talk about himself? The feeling from that conversation is the same one you will have on the wedding day, only multiplied.

Choose a photographer you would invite to the wedding even if he were not carrying a camera. Everything else can be learned, chemistry cannot.

You can check my side of that story on the About me page, and then decide whether I sound like someone you would spend the most important day with.

What actually books the date

A pleasant conversation and a verbal yes do not hold a date. The date is booked only once it is confirmed by a contract, with the date, the location and the scope of coverage written into it. A serious photographer shoots one wedding per day, so the Saturdays everyone wants go first, especially at the peak of the season.

If you have found yourself in someone else's work and the conversation felt right, do not wait for the perfect moment to confirm. It usually arrives only once the calendar is already full.
