An autumn wedding: why September and October are the secret behind the best albums

September and October have a light that summer cannot make. If you are hesitating over an autumn date, this text is for you.

Newlyweds in warm autumn tones before sunset

September has a habit the rest of the year cannot repeat. The sun sets just as the celebration gets going, the light softens from the afternoon onwards, and the air cools to the point where you can breathe normally even in a suit.

Couples often keep autumn as a backup option, so they are surprised when I tell them at our meeting that a good part of my favourite albums carry September and October dates. Here is what those two months do for photographs, and why autumn Saturdays do not wait around.

A couple of newlyweds in warm light before sunset

Softer light and a sunset that works with your schedule

In summer the golden hour falls after 8 pm, in the middle of dinner, when nobody wants to leave the hall. In September and October the sun sets between 5 and 7, so portraits in the most beautiful light fit into the schedule without a single compromise. The rest of the day is not the same either: the sun sits lower all afternoon, the shadows are softer and kinder to faces, so lovely frames happen even in hours that are impossible in summer.

In practice this means that going out for portraits does not feel like escaping from your own wedding. We step out for twenty minutes, catch the softest light of the day and come back before anyone notices you were gone. The schedule stays calm, and the album gets the frames we have to steal from the timeline in summer.

Colours no decoration can repeat

Rust, gold, burgundy and that deep green just before the first frost. The autumn palette works for you even when you do not notice it, because the background of every frame is warmer and richer than at the height of summer. A vineyard in October or an avenue with leaves on the ground looks like a set built to order, and nobody had to put it up or take it down. For me as a photographer it also means softer transitions in editing: in autumn warm tones are not added, they are simply kept.

If you are drawn to Romantic Story (Romantična priča), the brand of warm tones, depth and a filmic feel, autumn is its natural home. Few combinations fall into place as well as that edition and October light.

The only thing autumn asks in return is a little flexibility with the schedule. The sunset does not negotiate, so we move the portraits to suit it and not the cake. I tell couples this in advance and so far nobody has regretted it.

Wedding celebration in an autumn setting and warm tones

It is more comfortable for everyone, and you can see it in the photographs

At a July wedding at noon everyone pretends they are not hot, and that pretending shows in the frame. In September a suit does not itch, hair and make-up survive until dawn, and older guests are not counting the hours until the shade. When people feel good, the smile is more honest, the dancing lasts longer and they forget more easily that I am there. That gives me more living frames, and you an album that looks like your day.

There is a purely practical side too: the cake does not fear the sun, and the veil and the dress survive the walk to the location without drama. When the body is comfortable, the face is calmer as well. That cannot be acted out in photographs. Children last longer, the music outside plays longer, and the whole day gets that easy rhythm you recognise later in the album.

Dates fill up faster than you think

This is what couples most often underestimate. Of the autumn Saturdays everyone wants, from the start of September to the middle of October, there are only six or seven in a whole year. As a rule they go among the first, side by side with the ones in May. Add to that the fact that halls and bands are asked for the same Saturday and it is clear why autumn is agreed as early as spring.

In recent years more and more couples aim for September precisely because of the light and the temperature, so the window narrows from season to season. If an autumn wedding is on your mind, do not leave it as an idea for later. Check the date while the choice is still on your side.
