Children at a wedding: the most honest frames of the day

Children do not act, and that is exactly why their frames end up the most honest in the album. Why I never ask them to pose and what I tell their parents.

Matea and Dejan at their wedding, a spontaneous moment surrounded by guests

At one wedding I photographed, a little boy watched the whole ceremony leaning on his grandmother's shoulder, and then yawned loudly in the middle of the most solemn moment. The room laughed, the priest smiled, and that frame stayed among the favorites in the album.

Children at a wedding do what adults are not allowed to: they show exactly what they feel. When they are bored, you can see it. When they are happy, you can see the missing teeth too. For a photographer who hunts honest moments there is hardly a better ally in the room. This text is for every couple whose guest list includes the shortest guests as well.

Children do not act, and that is the whole charm

Adults arrange a smile and straighten their shoulders in front of a camera, children do not know that reflex. A little girl spinning in a new dress while the music plays, a boy guarding the ring cushion like the greatest treasure in the world, all of it is emotion without a filter.

So I photograph children at weddings from the side, documentary style, without a single directed scene. I come close enough to catch the expression and stay far enough away for them to forget me the moment I lower the camera. The best frames of children in my albums happened while nobody in the room knew I was photographing, the children included.

Why I never ask children to pose

For a child, posing is a task, and tasks at a party get boring quickly. After the third arranged smile you get a grimace, after the fifth you get tears. I much prefer to let them play and wait for the moment that arrives on its own. Play is their natural language, and my job is only to translate it into a frame.

We do take a group photograph with the children, of course, but a short one and through play. The best trick I have: I ask them all to shout something funny together. The frame right after that shout, when the real laughter starts, always beats the arranged one before it.

A child is not photographed by command but by patience. The moment always comes, you only have to be ready for it.

Small jobs that bring children into the story

Children at a wedding love having a role of their own. A girl carrying the petals, a boy in charge of the ring cushion, kids who are first on the dance floor the second the music starts. A role gives them a sense of importance, and it gives me frames that show how seriously they take the day.

If the little ones take part in the ceremony, a short rehearsal the day before works wonders. Not for the sake of perfection, but because a child who knows where to stand walks more calmly and enjoys it more. And if in the end he sets off on his own across the whole hall, that is a frame you will love too.

Gems that cannot be planned

A yawn in the middle of the ceremony, a serious face while the whole room applauds, a dance with grandmother on a still empty floor, a finger secretly dipped into the cake before it is served. Those are frames no shot list can predict, and an album without them feels noticeably poorer. Couples regularly pick them out among the favorites when they first go through the gallery.

So at every wedding I keep one eye on the children. While the adults follow the formalities, the children live their own parallel celebration, and that celebration is pure gold for the lens.

Advice for parents: let them be

The best thing a parent can do for the photographs is not to correct the child every ten minutes. A crumpled shirt and grass on the knees are the sign of a day well spent, and in photographs they look like life, because that is what they are. An ironed child who sits still all evening exists only in dreams, and honestly, I would not know how to photograph one.

My approach is the same as with adults: an unobtrusive presence and patience. Children usually accept me as one more relative with a strange bag, and that is exactly when the frames I love this job for happen.
