What to wear for an engagement shoot: a guide that keeps it simple
No idea what to wear for the shoot? A few simple rules solve the dilemma, with no shopping and no fashion stress.

Half the messages I get a week before an engagement shoot begin the same way: we have no idea what to wear. I understand the panic, but the answer is simpler than you think.
This guide is deliberately short. An engagement shoot is a walk and a conversation, not a fashion production, so the clothes should follow that spirit. A few rules are quite enough, and I wrote them so you can close the topic in five minutes.
Comfort above all
The first and most important rule: wear what makes you feel like yourselves. If you put on a dress bought for the shoot for the first time that day, it will show in how you hold yourself. If you have spent your whole life in jeans and sneakers, be in them at the shoot too, just in a slightly dressier version.
At the shoot we walk, we sit on low walls, we go through grass. Shoes that pinch and a skirt you cannot bend down in will kill the ease within ten minutes. And ease is the one thing that cannot be added to a photograph afterwards.
The same principle goes for hair and makeup. The version of you your partner knows and loves always works better in photographs than a complete transformation.
Colors that work in nature
I do most engagement shoots outdoors, in greenery or by water, so we choose colors that set you apart from the background without shouting:
- Earthy and warm tones: beige, cream, cinnamon, olive
- Muted pastel shades: dusty pink, light blue, lavender
- The classic that never fails: a white shirt and jeans
- One stronger color is fine, but on one of you
Pay attention to how the two of you go together as well. You do not have to match down to the detail, it is enough that you are in a similar warmth of tone. The easiest trick: lay both outfits out on the bed side by side. If you like how they sit together there, they will sit well in the frame too. If the shoot is in the city, the same rules apply, only the colors may be a shade bolder, because the background is calmer than greenery.
What to avoid
The list of things to avoid is shorter than the list of things to wear, but it is worth respecting:
- Fine patterns and tight checks, they flicker in a photograph
- Large logos and lettering
- Neon colors, they cast a glow onto the skin
- New shoes you have not broken in
- Too many accessories, the frame likes a clean silhouette
And a piece of advice from experience: do not buy anything you would not wear again. If a piece ends up at the bottom of the wardrobe after the shoot, it was the wrong choice for the shoot as well.
Layers and small details
Layers are a small trick that helps a lot. A shirt over a t-shirt, a jacket carried in the hand. For her a light jacket or a scarf over the shoulders. With layers we get variations without changing outfits, and the late afternoon before sunset can be cooler than it looks while you are packing.
Among the details, a hat, an elegant belt or bolder earrings work well. Do bring the engagement ring cleaned, we will photograph it up close at least a few times.
Two outfits are enough
One more relaxed and one dressier outfit cover everything we need. You change somewhere halfway through the shoot and the album gets two different stories from the same afternoon. If one of them is the outfit you got engaged in, even better, the photographs gain a small private layer of story.
I do not recommend more than two. Every change eats time, and the most beautiful light does not wait. I would rather spend that time on walking and talking, that is where the frames that make a shoot worth doing are made.
The most important thing is not hanging in the wardrobe
The best thing you can bring to a shoot is a free afternoon with no obligations afterwards and a phone on silent. In ten years only the two of you will notice the clothes. Everyone will notice the feeling in the photographs.
