Rain at a wedding: a plan B that spoils nothing

The forecast shows rain and the panic starts. There is no need. Rain softens the light, clear umbrellas wait in the car and covered locations stand in reserve.

The newlyweds in the soft light of a cloudy day

The forecast seven days before the wedding shows rain and my phone rings. Always the same question, always the same note of panic in the voice. And always the same answer from my side: we have a plan, and rain is a smaller problem than it looks on a screen.

After all the seasons I carry in my legs I can also say this calmly: some of the photographs I love most were made in the rain or right after it.

Rain softens the light, and that is good news

A cloudy sky is, photographically speaking, one enormous diffuser. The light becomes soft and even, nobody squints, there are no hard shadows across faces. Portraits on a cloudy day often turn out lovelier than in strong sunshine, only that is rarely mentioned, because sun sounds better in a plan.

Wet surfaces are a gift of their own. Cobblestones after rain reflect the light, greenery gains depth, and the air gets that clarity you really can see in photographs.

Couples see this best afterwards, in their own photographs. The fear of the forecast turns into a story that gets retold, and the frames under an umbrella become a favourite part of the album. It sounds strange until it happens to you.

What I do when the forecast shows rain

Seven days before the wedding I start following the forecast for the location. If rain is seriously announced, I scout covered options nearby: porches, colonnades, wide terraces, the entrance of the venue and the light inside it. By the day itself I have two or three spots ready that we move to without drama and without losing time.

Clear umbrellas always sit in my car. Clear because they let the light through and cast no colour on faces, and in the frame they work like a styling detail. A couple under a clear umbrella, with a wet street behind them, is among the frames couples print most often afterwards.

I always share the plan with the couple a few days ahead, so that you know what happens if the sky does not cooperate. When you know there is a clear order of moves, you meet the day more calmly, and that shows in the photographs more than any umbrella.

Rain has never ruined a single wedding I have photographed. Nerves about rain can, and that is why my job is to take them off the two of you.

Covered does not mean dull

The porch of the venue, a large window with good light, a church entrance or an old gateway are all places where calm and elegant portraits are made. In twenty minutes under a roof you cover everything you would cover outside, only the atmosphere is more intimate. Along the way, soft light from a single source, a window or the opening of a porch, gives portraits a depth photographers otherwise search for a long time.

And if the rain stops even briefly, we go out. Ten minutes after a downpour, while the streets are still wet and the light soft, can be the loveliest window of the whole day. I wait for those moments ready, because they pass quickly.

The worst case is rarer than you think

An all day downpour with no break at all is genuinely rare. Far more often the rain comes in intervals, and for portraits we need exactly one interval. Everything else, from the ceremony to the first dance, happens under a roof anyway. Across all my seasons so far, the days with no window to step outside at all I can count on the fingers of one hand.

For everything else there is a sensible arrangement: if the day really turns impossible, we can repeat the portraits another day, in peace and in your wedding clothes. Couples who have tried that kind of session usually say they ended up glad the rain moved everything.

That is why we always build the timeline of the day with a margin, so the portrait block can move an hour earlier or later without a chain reaction. And for couples still choosing a place, it is worth knowing that most of the locations I recommend have a covered option a couple of minutes on foot away.
