A pre-wedding shoot: do you really need it?
A pre-wedding shoot is not obligatory, but for couples who shy away from the camera it helps more than anything else. Honestly about when it is worth it and when you can calmly skip it.

The first fifteen minutes of every pre-wedding shoot look the same: stiff shoulders, nervous laughter and that eternal question of what to do with our hands. Then the walk begins, the conversation picks up and the camera stops existing. When I meet the same couple at their wedding, months later, there is no trace of that nervousness left.
That is why I consider a pre-wedding shoot the most useful rehearsal there is. But let me be honest right at the start: it is not obligatory and it is not for everyone. Let us sort out when it is worth it and when you can calmly skip it.
Meeting the camera without pressure
A pre-wedding shoot is an hour or two of relaxed walking with a camera, usually in a place the two of you love. There is no schedule racing ahead, no hundred guests, no hairstyle that has to survive until midnight. If a frame does not work, we repeat it without any harm done. That freedom changes everything.
During that time the two of you learn how I work: that I do not ask for stiff poses but for movement and conversation, that I prefer honest laughter and a glance to a perfectly arranged frame. And I learn about you: which of you is shy, who smiles with their eyes, who enjoys being in the foreground. On the wedding day none of that has to be discovered anymore.
On top of that, the shoot is a chance to check the location: where the light falls in the afternoon, where the crowds are, where the nicest walk is. If the very thought of it already gives you stage fright, I have written a whole text on how to relax in front of the camera. The short version: nobody knows how to pose and that is completely fine.

On the wedding day everything goes easier
Couples who have been through a pre-wedding shoot arrive at the wedding like an old crew. They know that walking towards me is not a test, they know they are allowed to talk while I photograph, they know nobody will ask them to act. Portraits that would otherwise need half an hour of warming up start practically right away.
That shows most in the part of the day when time is most precious. The golden hour lasts as long as it lasts. When a couple steps into the frame without thinking about it, we use those twenty or so minutes before sunset down to the last ray, instead of spending them shaking off nerves.
There is also an effect you do not see immediately: confidence. Once you have seen yourselves in photographs you like, you walk into your wedding without that worry about how you will come out. Instead of thinking about the frames, you think about the day.
Photographs that get a second life
Pre-wedding frames rarely stay in a folder. Couples put them on invitations and thank you cards, on a wedding website for guests from abroad, and one framed photograph often greets the guests at the entrance to the hall. It is nicer when a photograph that means something stands in those places instead of a snapshot from a phone. For some they also serve as a small editing test: they see how they look in the brand they are considering for the album.
There is also a practical little thing couples love: the wardrobe is entirely yours. You come in something you feel like yourselves in, without formal discipline. If you do not know what to wear, there is a guide that keeps it simple.
When to skip it without any regret
If the two of you feel at home in front of a camera, if you live in two different cities in the year before the wedding or your calendar is simply full, a pre-wedding shoot is nothing to bite your nails over. A wedding is photographed perfectly well without it, and we do our getting to know each other through conversation and the first half hour of the day.
My recommendation is therefore simple. If a camera makes you uncomfortable, a shoot before the wedding will help you more than any advice I can write down. If there is no discomfort, then it is simply another lovely day with photographs, so make the decision according to your wishes and your schedule.
